About Pulse Oximeters

Pulse OximeterPulse oximetry refers to measuring the level of oxygen within the blood, which is an important process for many people in order to help diagnose particular conditions, or monitor their progress over time. Pulse oximeters are also considered to be among the most important medical instruments used in the field of anaesthesia. Its benefits include the fact that it is completely non-invasive, simple and quick to carry out a test.

Oximeters have been recognisable in their current form since the 1980s, although modern units are much more sophisticated and reliable. They are operated by attaching a probe to the body, typically an ear lobe or finger, which is connected to the main unit with a digital display.

Two wavelengths of light are both transmitted from one side of the clip to the other, through the body, in order to measure how the different types of light react to the blood. This depends on the amount of oxygen currently in the red blood cells. Based on the results, a reading is then given automatically in SpO2, meaning peripheral oxygen saturation level.

During surgery, when a patient is under anaesthesia, an oximeter may be used to constantly monitor oxygen levels in the blood, drawing attention to any sudden change or an oxygen saturation level of below 95%, which could be dangerous. The same application could be useful for patients who are in any unstable condition. In normal circumstances, an oximeter is helpful for monitoring blood oxygen levels in patients with respiratory problems such as asthma, diagnosing sleep disorders and other medical uses. They can even be used at high altitudes by pilots, athletes or climbers to help maintain a safe oxygen level.

Since Foursquare Healthcare is a comprehensive medical equipment supplier, pulse oximeters are part of the range we have in stock, including several different devices. Our pulse oximeters range from the low cost, lightweight MD300C15D Finger Pulse Oximeter to the top-of-the-range Nonin 9550 Onyx II, which offers a very high degree of accuracy and advanced functionality.

All of our oximeters offer reliable results for medical use, although more advanced models are usually designed to give the most accurate readings and these are better suited for use by medical professionals in clinics, surgeries or hospitals.
