AED Defibrillators & CPR

Defibrillators are used to provide a electric shock to someone suffering from a cardiac arrest. A cardiac arrest usually occurs when the heart's natural rhythm gets upset due to it's chaotic electric activity and as a result it stops pumping the blood. It is a very serious and life threatening condition. A defibrillator provides an electric shock through the chest wall and helps the heart get out of this abnormal rhythm and restart it's natural pacemaker.

AED is an abbreviation for Automated External Defibrillator and as the name suggests, the automated defibrillators can be used by a lay responder or a minimally trained responder to save the life of someone in cardiac arrest. AEDs automatically diagnose the condition of the patient through it's electrodes connected to the patient. It reads the heart rhythm and decide whether a shock or a CPR is required or a mix of both is required. Some Automated External Defibrillators also help the rescuer in providing a CPR. When a cardiac arrest occurs, the first 2 -3 minutes are most crucial and a treatment is required even before an ambulance can arrive. Therefore the AEDs are essential to be placed at workplaces and public places like stations, schools, universities, gymnasiums etc. Due to the automated working of these defibrillators they are the best option available to help save someone in the event of a cardiac arrest, even where there is no medical help available.
